100 posts in 365 days

I decided to start a blog as I am constantly reading so much about the changing habits of search and how to make the website rank well for the long term. I am setting myself a goal of writing 100 posts in 365 days. Fingers crossed I can stick to my word!

New Vanilla CMS Platform

I decided to re-design my site using my NEW favorite vanilla platform, Kirby CMS. I have used many Content Management Systems in my 12 years of being within the industry, but nothing comes close to the functionality of Kirby. What a find!

Kirby is file-based – No databases in sight (at last we can rid ourselves of SQL). This involves first class performance, version controllable content, simple backups and many other awesome side effects. This makes the website blazing fast, which is a ranking factor in Google's algorithms. WIN, WIN!

Website UX - Less, but better

User experience is an essential factor in the development of a website these days. It keeps people on your site longer, and it makes it easy to use, navigation easy, and pleasing to the eye.

Did you know, more than 50% of all searches made on Google are on mobile devices (iPads, iPhones, etc.) This suggests that we should design for mobile first then make it backwards compatible for desktops.

Summing Up

I had great fun, some late nights and a little help and ideas from friends to get to where the website looks today, I hope you like it, and nothing is too distracting. I think it turned out OK, that is the challenge for all of us—to create warmth in a digital world. We are still analogue beings. Our brains and eyes are analogue.

Setting up the website in Kirby was a breeze, I highly recommend it. Once you try it, you just won't go back to the dark side (database driven platforms). It is so adaptable and great for SEO. What's not to like, I cannot find anything, and I always look outside of the box. The designers need to take great credit; they have produced a masterpiece.

Designing for mobile first is a newish concept but it is more than worth the time and effort, and the learning curve is fast and fulfilling, once you get your head round it. We all try to future proof things in our lives, why not our websites too! Give it a try, and if not, get a website consultant to give you a helping hand.
